Monique Agbanyo, age 20, is a mom to a one year old daughter. When she first came to the TRA Young Parents Program she was distracted, anxious, and suffered from depression and low self-esteem. Like most of the young people who come to YPP, she faced many challenges including possible homelessness, court battles with her child’s father and his family, and unreliable transportation, to name a few. She was also eight months pregnant.

But in spite of all obstacles, Monique persevered. After giving birth, she was determined to finish the program and meet the goals she had established for herself.

With enthusiasm, determination, personal growth, and support from TRA staff, Monique earned her High School Equivalency credential in September 2017, after being out of school for many years. She is now a full time student at TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy, fulfilling a life-long dream to become a cosmetologist!

According to Monique, “TRA was the best decision I’ve ever made. It truly changed my life. It took a while but, all the time was worth it. I never thought I would get my GED, I just wanted to give up sometimes, but Miss Judy was definitely my motivation; she helped me so much. On the days I couldn’t get up in the morning, there she was calling me, texting me, saying ‘you’re doing this for your daughter’. I would recommend any teen mom to go to the Young Parents Program at TRA. (Miss Judy) helped me get into TONI&GUY Hairdressing School and I love it. I could not thank her enough; this really changed my life for the better.”

Congratulations Monique! We couldn’t be more proud of you and your accomplishments!
