On May 4th, staff and students of Quincy YouthBuild joined Team Opportunity Quincy in Project Bread’s 46th annual Walk for Hunger. This year 43,000 people came together as a community to raise awareness of the issue of hunger. Project Bread’s 20 mile Walk for Hunger is the largest walk event in Massachusetts and the oldest continual one-day pledge walk in the country.
Led by Team Captain Melissa Pond, Community Development Planner for City of Quincy, the team of 27 registered walkers gathered in Boston Common on a brisk Sunday morning. The course undulates through Boston and several surrounding communities. Well-wishers and volunteers along the route provided encouraging words, free hugs, and much needed water and snacks. The students and staff challenged and pushed each other to the finish line. Team Captain Melissa confessed that she never thought she could do the entire 20 miles “but the YouthBuild students inspired me!”
Prior to the Walk, students raised funds through personal donations, family and friends. They also took part in raffle sales (thanks to sponsor Sweet Frog Frozen Yogurt of Quincy), a can drive, and a classroom penny/spare change collection. All totaled, Team Opportunity Quincy reached our $2500 fundraising goal!
