May 23, 2016 marked the kick-off for the 2016 “Scientists in the Classroom” series, made possible by the Saint-Gobain Corporation / CertainTeed partnership with YouthBuild USA to support its green education and job-training program for low-income youth.

“Scientists in the Classroom” is designed to bring a new level of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) training to Worcester YouthBuild students. It also provides Northborough R&D Center Saint-Gobain/ CertainTeed scientists, engineers, and technicians with the opportunity to share their expertise and their career stories in a volunteer capacity within the classroom setting.

Senior Principal Scientist, CertainTeed Rachel Pytel and Senior Technical Specialist, SuperAbrasives Linda Bateman shared their personal career path stories, inspiring students and staff. They then conducted a lesson on “Introduction to Thermal Expansion” with demonstrations utilizing CertainTeed siding and exercises in area and expansion. The presentation was informative, fun, and a great learning experience for students!

A few student comments follow:
