Lesson 1: Simple Machines and Work
Identify basic machines and how they save and convert energy.
The Elements of Machines - describes the basic machine elements including wheel and axle, wedge, pulley, screw and lever as well as more complicated machine elements such as gears, cams, and chains.
Simple Machines Activities - students will dissect toys to find their working machine parts, and then design and build their own "gadget", using at least three of the simple machines.
Lesson 2: Conservation of Mechanical Energy
Apply the principles of conservation of matter and energy to mechanics situations.
Lesson 3: Principles of Heat Engines
Explain how heat engines convert heat energy into more useable forms.
